  1. MORREION 1 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "Morreion," by Jack Vance, published by Underwood-Miller in 1979.

You would think that the worse thing that can happen to a writer, even an established one, is having his work rejected, or what can happen to his work in the hands of a bad editor. But really, what's worse is what can happen to him inside his head when his mind goes blank. When the thing he wants most in life lies dormant inside his mind, and he can't get it out . . .

There's a short story about a such writer that briefly, goes like this . . .
"Henry Dorn sat very still in front of his typewriter, his hands folded in his lap, shoulders hunched forward, seeing nothing, unable to think of anything. He sat like that for hours . . . Finally, he pushed the typewriter aside and reached for the Times' "Help Wanted" ads."
    - from a short story by Ayn Rand -

There is no doubt in my mind that this sad Henry Dorn story has been played out in real life by a million writers, or would-be writers, since the printing press was invented. Even now, as you read this, there is a writer somewhere looking at those "Help Wanted" ads.

If you are thinking of being a writer, be prepared to persevere.
